I got screwed recently when I had the chance to sit with Ypsilanti based, punk rockers, Screw.

Formed in late summer of 2013, Screw is comprised of Tommy T, formerly of and founding member of 60 Second Crush and Down With Hatred on Vocals, HotRod Tusek, long time guitar shredder for The Nobodys, Elrod Adams,  known for his exceptional bass skills in such bands as Down With Hatred and Select4, and Nik Savage, founding member of Co.Dam and long time drummer for Cult Heroes.

As this current project illustrates, they have taken their sound back to a more punky, energetic, almost soulfully sleazy approach, drawing from some of their favorite artists throughout the years. That list includes: Johnny Thunders, Rancid, Ramones, Social Distortion, Sex Pistols and others.

This band proudly hails Detroit as it's home town with the rich fabric of music that has affected so many for so long. So their mission is pretty simple... To put the Rock back in Rock n Roll once again!

Bill Clements - FEATURE

Bill Clements is a phenomenal bass player by any standard. Throw in the fact that he lost his right hand years ago in an unfortunate industrial accident and you quickly realize just how remarkable he is.

We had the opportunity to sit with Bill and not only learn the history of his craft and the accident that shaped his style of play, but also got a glimpse of his character. Wacky at times and serious at others, Bill Clements is not only a great bass player but a great man, taking what life throws at him in stride, letting nothing get in his way of expressing the art within his head, heart and soul.

Born and raised in the Battle Creek, Michigan area, Bill was turned on to music at the age of 13 by the Progressive Rock stylings of such bands as The Who, Yes, Rush, Supertramp and more. This new found interest was a calling of sorts and he new he had to explore the possibilities of expression through this art form. Since everybody and their brother already played guitar, he chose the bass to hone his craft, and that he did.

At the age of 21, his world was changed forever. An unfortunate industrial accident took his right hand. A career ending event for most, Bill had determined, pretty much right away at the hospital, that this minor set back was going to be just that... a minor setback. This is a true testament to the character that has guided him through life ever since. He adapted his style of play and carried on, a decision that has inspired many along the way.

Bill, it's an honor to know ya.

Tantric - FEATURE

Hugo Ferreira, front man and founder of Tantric, has an interesting story to be told. Born of Portuguese descent when his military father was stationed  in Africa, he moved to the States when very young. Playing piano for as long as he can remember, he has always been musically driven. It was this drive that compelled him to move to the Motor City fresh out of high school to pursue his passion. And that he did.

One project led to another and he found himself in a band called Merge, who happened to be managed by the same company that managed another band called Days Of The New (DOTN). Playing shows together, Hugo met the boys that would one day be available when it was time for DOTN to restructure. When that time came, Tantric was born.

Fast forward 15 years and 5 albums later, Leon had a chance to sit with Hugo and his latest line up consisting of Derek Isaacs, TJ Taylor and Scott Wilson, a couple of real stand up guys form the South, to talk about some history and the latest release, 37 Channels.

Helping give life to 37 Channels are an impressive list of players and friends, including Shooter Jennings, Leif Garrett, bluesy rhythm guitarist Kenny Olson (Kid Rock); Hinder singer Austin Winkler, Saving Abel guitarist Scott Bartlett, Uncle Kracker axeman Kevin McCreery, and drummer Greg Upchurch (3 Doors Down). But make no mistake. If Ferreira is the only original member, 37 Channels is still very much a Tantric record. “It’s always been my baby. I’m still the guy who co-founded the band back in Louisville,” Hugo explains. “I've had different incarnations throughout the years, and the sounds have changed with the different players, but this is the most “Tantric” Tantric record so far."

Kaleido - FEATURE

A nice blend of Paramore meets No Doubt... heavy on the Gwen. At least, that is my take on Kaleido, a newer but seemingly veteran band. At just 2.5 years old, this band has already racked up a list of credentials that any band would envy.

Kaleido surfaced in Detroit in October 2011 as a powerhouse female fronted rock/pop band. The group fuses heavy hitting rock with fresh, melodically driven pop. Possessing enough torque to change the game and rescue rock & roll, Kaleido is familiar, yet rare. A Molotov cocktail of larger than life personality, passion, real life lyrics, tight musicianship, and an earth shaking live show, Kaleido is turning heads across the country.

Kaleido has had dates on the 2012 & 2013 Van's Warped Tour, CMJ Music Marathon, dates on the 2013 Rockstar Uproar Festival, lead singer Christina Chriss singing the National Anthem for the Detroit Tigers, Pistons and Red Wings, opening for Kid Rock, Evanescence, The Offspring, Chevelle, Skid Row, Tesla, Twenty One Pilots, and more. Kaleido was named the 2013 & 2014 BEST ROCK BAND in DETROIT by Real Detroit Weekly, and also won the 'People's Choice' on 89x for 11 consecutive nights, beating big name artists Muse, Jack White, Blink 182, & Billy Talent to name a few. Kaleido has gained a very strong and loyal fanbase called the "KaleidoFam".

Hear samples of 4 of their tracks off of the new album in this feature during the MCM-Minute breaks and be sure to check out the extended version on our YouTube channel for longer answers and additional questions.

Kaleido's new sophomore release 'UNBREAKABLE' (produced and recorded by Chuck Alkazian at Pearl Sound) is available on iTunes :

Blackport Speaker Cabinets - FEATURE

Hear from the co-founders of these revolutionary new speaker cabinets in this lighthearted, beer swilling, laugh infested interview. It's a bit unorthodox, but then again, so are the cabinets.

Blackport is an alternative to the standard speaker cabinet. Its deceptively simple design actually gives you two speaker cabinets in one; the sound changes depending on how you position it, going from a heavy bottom to more of a jazz feel. Use 2 cabs and you get a multitude of sound configurations to choose from.

Not only does a Blackport cabinet enhance the sound, its aesthetics enhance the back line too. With 30 colors to choose from, you can mix and match any combination to customize the look of your cabinet, truly making it your own. Each cabinet is solidly constructed in Metro Detroit using only the finest materials made in the U.S.A.

In this interview, you'll here from loyal customers Adam Pulver, bassist for Sick Smile, and Charlie Milkey, bassist for Orchyd, as they share their sentiments for these cabs. In addition, many others have discovered these game changing cabs like renowned bassist Bill Clements, of the Bill Clements Axiom, and Skid Marx, from The Seatbelts and Circus Boy.

These cabs currently come in 2 configurations, a bass cab sporting a 15" driver, weighing in at only 45 pounds, and a guitar cab equipped with a 12" driver, weighing only 37 pounds. Plans are in the works for a smaller version that will adorn an 8" cone for an even more compact guitar rig. The amazing thing about these cabs is that they will stand up to multi-cone, front loaded cabinets all day long.

The Luckouts - FEATURE

I lucked out recently when I had the chance to enter an eclectic studio with as much character as its occupants, The Luckouts. The walls were covered from floor to ceiling with an over stimulating array of eye candy, the coolest collection of memorabilia, posters, nick knacks and collectibles. I may have to go back to do a feature on the studio itself.

The Luckouts formed in June of 2007 with Liz Scaris-"Ruiner" taking a stab at lead vocals for the first time. She had played Bass Guitar with The Ruiners for 8 years and has been influenced by such female musicians as Suzi Quatro, Joan Jett, & Lita Ford. She wanted to give her song writing and vocals a try so she invited seasoned drummer Jim Faulkner and bassist Matt Harbison to join her. They played as a 3-piece and were writing songs when they met up with lead guitar player Gary Chechak in Sept 2008.  He brought his own style of song writing ability to the table along with guitar solos that they felt were priceless.

In April of 2011, Matt left the band. Soon after, on May 20, 2011 the Luckouts played their first show with new bassist Gretchen Domino. She too was a seasoned musician that played with such bands as Huntress, Spat and many others. Gretchen (aka Fancy Pants) has a signature style of playing.

In early 2013, Jim and Gary parted amicably to devote time to ongoing personal projects and new drummer Dan Durecki answered Liz's ad when searching for a replacement. Dan is a powerhouse drummer with some serious chops and has played with some notable Detroit icons such as Bootsey X & The Lovemasters, The Luddites, and Jill Jack to name but a few. This new, rocking 3-piece line up works well together and shows a definite chemistry between them.

As a perfect example of raw Detroit rock-n-roll, The Luckouts are a band not to be missed!

Seven Story Fall - FEATURE

Hunter Kennedy
I had an opportunity to sit with Hunter Kennedy of Seven Story Fall. Doing a feature on this guy was a no brainer after seeing his music video for the song "Sing to Me". With it's catchy hook and infectious chorus, I had found it stuck in my head for days. His radio friendly pop-punk style of rock seems to be just the thing that the big media folks are looking for and it is a wonder to me that he hasn't hit just yet.

At age 11, Hunter received his first guitar and decided to pursue a band. In 2002, Seven Story Fall was born. Meeting many musicians and having members come and go, many things happened over the span of 10 years.  In the year 2004, the band became more serious and bigger shows started to come along such as "From First to Last / Chiodos / MXPX / The Color Fred" in Milwaukee, WI. Next came "A Skylit Drive / Four Letter Lie / Before Their Eyes" in Cleveland, OH. There were also many festivals like Summerfest in Warren, MI with "We Came as Romans / Attack Attack" and the Jackson County Fairgrounds with "Otep / Sevendust".

With 3 EP's behind them, this band is not new to the music scene and have also enjoyed quite a bit of press.

Their latest LP,  Stories & Analogies started as a 5 song EP produced by Erik Ron (Good Charlotte, Panic at the Disco, Hit the Lights and Saosin), but within a couple months they signed to Tate Music Group. They were given the option to release the EP with the 5 previously recorded songs or record 7 more at Tate's studio and release a full length album. The result is a full length concept album that tell's a story... hence the name.

Now with only hunter left, acting as a solo artist, he is determined to make this full length a success. Seven Story Fall is looking to create a huge buzz everywhere from newspapers and magazines to exclusive interviews and live shows this year with their first full length on a label.  "We are finally at a point where things are only progressing, and with the release of this new album and music video, we hope to make an impression this time around", says Hunter.

Check out my interview with Hunter in this episode of MCM-TV and be sure to stick around for a bit of his video for "Sing to Me" at the end.
